Mr. Utpal Sengupta led the US Foods major ConAgra’s affiliate in India, Agro Tech Foods Ltd. (ATFL) as President and CEO for twelve years. During this period, Agro Tech Foods developed from an edible oils company to an integrated branded foods business. ATFL operates across the value chain in a range of food categories and has a focused portfolio of strong, innovative brands. This has enabled the company to consistently improve profitability in a crowded market place. The potential of India and the demonstrated performance of ATFL resulted in ConAgra Foods announcing in January ’08 India as one of its only two focus international markets Mr.Sengupta laid down his responsibilities at ATFL from April ’09.
Before joining ConAgra and ATFL, Mr.Sengupta worked for the consumer products major Unilever in India and abroad for twenty-four years. During this period, he held leadership positions in sales, marketing and general management in a wide range of product categories such as Home & Personal Care and Foods & Beverages. Besides the stewardship of many of Unilever’s most successful brands in India, his key contributions include laying down the basic operating model for a low-cost business system designed to enable Unilever compete effectively with local manufacturers and to restructure the sales and distribution system of Unilever’s Indonesian business and the tea marketing company, Brooke Bond India.
Before leaving Unilever, Mr.Sengupta was responsible for Corporate Planning of Hindustan Unilever Ltd. In this role, he investigated several new business opportunities, which have since grown to become sizeable and profitable growth categories in India.
Mr.Sengupta was the Chairman of the AP chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) during 2008-09. He has also been past Chairman of CII’s National Committee on Food Processing and Chairman of CII’s Foodpro ’99. He is currently strategic advisor to the Globsyn Group, Asianol and the Symphony Technology Group. He has been a director on the boards of the seed company Advanta India, the human resources company Magna Infotech and the packaging systems company ITW Signode. He is currently a member of the Governing Council of the Globsyn Business School and is a director of the biotechnology company Sribiotech and printing inks company DIC India Ltd. He has lectured on various management topics at the IIMs and at ISB.
Mr.Sengupta started a programme called ‘Feeding Children Better’ while working with ATFL and has been associated with several institutions engaged in providing education, nutrition and healthcare to underprivileged children in different parts of the country. He currently leads the efforts of St. Jude ChildCare Centres in Kolkata. This organization provides free accommodation to children suffering from cancer and to their families.
Mr.Sengupta was a JBNSTS scholar, and graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. He has a MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and was awarded a gold medal for academics when graduating from IIM A.
